Holistic approach to a complex traumatic wound in the lower limb from primary care
Abstract
Traumatic wounds represent more than 50% of primary care visits. Success in managing complex wounds depends on proper assessment and approach. The objective of this article is to present a clinical case of a traumatic lower limb injury after applying the DOMINATE acronym, which evaluates 12 parameters (debridement, offloading, exudate, malignancy, medication, mental health, infection, infla mmation, nutrition, arterial insufficiency, advanced techniques, and edema), associated with nursing techniques and specialized dressings. The result was wound healing, thus improving the patient's quality of life. In conclusion, the DOMINATE acronym is very useful for decision-making and care planning, without forgetting the importance of controlling other fundamental aspects, such as pain and nutrition, addressing the treatment holistically.
