Therapeutic Potential of Exosomes for Treating Androgenic Alopecia
Abstract
Objective
Exosomes have emerged as a promising therapeutic modality for treatment of androgenic alopecia which can lead to phenomenal results in a short period of time. In recent years, scientists have made exciting breakthroughs in understanding how cells communicate through tiny vesicles called exosomes. These discoveries are helping us map out the complex web of cellular interactions and signaling pathways that exosomes facilitate bringing us close to unlocking their potential in health in the treatment of androgenic alopecia. This research sought to investigate the efficacy of salmon’s tissue derived exosomes could boost hair growth in AGA patients when applied into the scalp through microneedling.
Materials and methods
This prospective study enrolled five participants: three male patients (aged 25-34 years) with androgenic alopecia (Norwood-Hamilton III-VI) and two female patients at mean age of 29 years with female pattern hair loss (Ludwig I-II). Salmon tissue-derived exosomes were used, and hair density measurements were obtained using the ARAMO SG phototrichogram system. Markers CD31 and ki67 were used to assess the levels of dermal vascularization and cells’ proliferation of outer root sheath respectively.
Results
Phototrichogram analysis demonstrated a statistically significant increase in hair density as early as the second week following completion of four exosomes application procedure administered in conjunction with microneedling therapy. Histopathological analysis of scalp biopsies using immunohistochemical markers CD31 which is an endothelial cell marker and ki67 a proliferation marker demonstrated that topical administration of salmon-derived exosomes enhances perifollicular microvascularization and stimulates proliferative activity in hair follicle cells.
Conclusion
Quantitative analysis revealed salmon-derived exosome therapy significantly enhanced hair density parameters while maintaining high treatment satisfaction levels. The intervention was well tolerated, with zero incidence of treatment-related adverse effects.
